Metrolinx Response Mimico GO Station

In February, Metrolinx released a new business case analysis that included the recommendation to create a new Park Lawn GO Station in addition to operating the current Mimico GO Station. We provided more details of this proposal in our March Mimico Community News. In response to this analysis the MRA sent a letter to Metrolinx supporting the two station solution and advocating for long overdue improvements to make the Mimico GO station accessible. This week we received the following response from Metrolinx which we have reviewed below.

“Thank you for your letter and for your support on our decision to move Park Lawn GO station forward to a Preliminary Design Business Case. Please allow me to provide an update on Mr. Verster’s behalf.

“The proposed Park Lawn GO station is in addition to the continued operation of the current Mimico GO station.”

This is good news as previously the business case also highlighted that “Further analysis is required to determine if Mimico station should be retained”. This response would imply that the preservation of the Mimico GO station is a priority for Metrolinx.

In reference to the work to make Mimico GO station accessible Metrolinx stated:

“Metrolinx is working hard to upgrade Mimico station as soon as possible. As we work to deliver 15-minute electrified train service, we need to ensure that any work at Mimico station is complementary to the service expansion work.

“In December 2017, Metrolinx released a Request for Qualification for work on the Lakeshore West corridor including Mimico and Long Branch stations. We aim to release the Request for Proposals in spring 2018. Work is expected to begin by 2020, with estimated completion in 2023.

“The improvements at Mimico are comprised of a complete station reconstruction, including a new station building, west entrance on the north side, parking improvements, platform reconstruction as well as various Metrolinx initiatives to enhance the customer experience.”

This is the first time we have received an updated timeline for the improvements to the Mimico GO Station since 2016. It is worth noting that the end date it now a year later than originally stated, and given their timelines we would expect to see a Request for Proposal issued in the coming weeks.

Dear Mr. Moore,

Thank you for your letter and for your support on our decision to move Park Lawn GO station forward to a Preliminary Design Business Case. Please allow me to provide an update on Mr. Verster’s behalf.

The proposed Park Lawn GO station is in addition to the continued operation of the current Mimico GO station.

Metrolinx is working hard to upgrade Mimico station as soon as possible. As we work to deliver 15-minute electrified train service, we need to ensure that any work at Mimico station is complementary to the service expansion work.

In December 2017, Metrolinx released a Request for Qualification for work on the Lakeshore West corridor including Mimico and Long Branch stations. We aim to release the Request for Proposals in spring 2018. Work is expected to begin by 2020, with estimated completion in 2023.

The improvements at Mimico are comprised of a complete station reconstruction, including a new station building, west entrance on the north side, parking improvements, platform reconstruction as well as various Metrolinx initiatives to enhance the customer experience. The improvements at Long Branch will also include a complete station reconstruction, parking improvements, platform reconstruction, shelters as well as various enhancements to customer experience.

Both stations will be accessible when this work is complete.

As part of our commitment to bring 30-minute service to our Lakeshore West customers, Metrolinx completed upgrades to Mimico station in 2013. This included platform rehabilitation, lengthening of platforms, new platform shelters, expanding the parking lot, and creation of a passenger pick-up and drop-off loop. At Long Branch station in 2011 Metrolinx completed platform rehabilitation, new platform shelters, stair enclosures and tunnel rehabilitation.

Thank you for writing in.

Warm regards,

Raj

no mention of the Greenway from Ourland Park to Grand Avenue Park – hopefully it is included in the design for the new station – it appears that the Greenway must go through the station site?

  2. The Park Lawn & Lakeshore corridor is in desperate need of a Go Station asap. The old “Christie Bakery” site is now under construction and this will add to the density of population. I believe that a GO station at Park Lawn should be of a higher priority than updating Mimico & Longbranch stations.

All one has to do is to compare populations at the three sites to understand the urgency of a station at Park Lawn.
