Canada’s Minister of Transport (Steven MacKinnon) confirmed yesterday that “at this stage” they are only focused on safety enhancements at the Island Airport.
Transport Canada counted 89,000 survey participants with 87 per cent opposing any changes to the airport.
Ontario Transport Minister Prabmeet Sarkaria took the rejection as a delay rather than a cancellation. Minister Sarkaria is also responsible for our GO Station (learn more about the #MimicoGOFiasco).
According to the Toronto Star there is also a senior official in the Ontario government, who felt MacKinnon’s statement still left the door open for a future expansion:
“I don’t view this project as grounded.”
Conversations with residents have already yielded new ideas for what to do next:

Ask Canada’s Minister of Transport to officially close the door the Province still thinks is open. Or tell us clearly what the ‘next stage‘ involves and when it starts.

Ask the Province to return the land and the seat to the City

FOI the amount of tax payer money the Province is spending on radio ads promoting “more flights & expansion”. Could the federal government have prevented that waste of tax payer money with a firm NO from the beginning (like in 2015)?
