Summer 2023 – Mimico Community News and Events

Clean-Up Day at Mimico Parks

On May 27th, the MRA organized a clean-up day at more than half a dozen area parks. The groups went to work cleaning garbage, plastics, and paper waste from many community parks as well as from a few busy pedestrian areas.  A couple of photos of our clean-up crew with their filled bags from the day are displayed below.

Some used the day as an opportunity for the whole family to pitch in. This bag was nearly busting at the seams.

Thanks to everyone for taking part and helping to keep our parks clean and safe.

Mimico GO Station Redevelopment Plan

MRA Vice President Mike Majeski was interviewed recently as part of an article in the Mimico Guardian regarding the transit-oriented residential intensification plans underway as part of the improvements to Mimico GO Station.

The proposed transit-oriented community — expected to transform Mimico GO Station and its surrounding area — is getting generally positive responses for its efforts to improve accessibility, create housing, and support business revitalization.

Mike noted that many Mimico residents are eagerly anticipating the mixed-use project.“People are excited about having more of a community hub, an accessible GO station, different station entrances, and business revitalization in that pocket,” He added that the MRA also wants to see Vandyk incorporate green building design.

Remember to Cast Your Vote for Mayor On June 26th, Torontonians will have the opportunity to elect a new Mayor.

Many see this election as a pivotal moment in deciding on the City’s future.  We face many challenges including a growth infrastructure deficit, a lack of affordable housing for both renters and first-time home buyers and transportation issues among others.  Solving these challenges will require difficult choices and finding ways to challenge assumptions and bring people together to get things done.  Each of us must decide who we think best reflects the kind of leader that Toronto needs to chart a course for the future.

Regardless of who you choose to vote for, it is important to make your voice heard and to be part of the democratic process. We encourage everyone to vote.

If you did not receive a voter’s card, make sure you are registered to vote.

Thursday, July 13th
 from 6 – 8 PM

Get to know your neighbours at our upcoming meet and greet event at Great Lakes Brewery (30 Queen Elizabeth Blvd, Etobicoke – across from Costco). Come by on Thursday, July 13th to mingle with MRA members, as well as other Mimico residents – share stories, start conversations, and get to know about the issues facing our community. Drop in any time from 6 to 8 PM for a casual event on their patio. The first beer is on Great Lakes! After that, it is a “buy what you drink” event. There will be some light snacks and a bunch of friendly faces.

Here is a photo taken at a similar event last summer.  Hope to see you there.

Mimico Square MRKT Continues All Summer

If you haven’t dropped by to check out the local Mimico Square Market yet, there are still several opportunities over the summer.  The Market is open from 10 am to 4 pm on the second Saturday of each month in July, August, and September.  Here is a glimpse of activities at a recent market.

There are about two dozen local merchants and a few service providers on hand with a wide range of handicrafts,
clothing and accessories, children’s books, food and beverages, information about local services, and more. Come see for yourself.

We are there as well looking to meet local residents and to hear about your interests and concerns.
You can find us at the Mimico Residents Association booth on July 8th, August 12th or September 9th. Hope to see you there.
