Data & Science Keep Kids Safe on Their Way to School
What are the safety implications of Doug Ford’s plan to remove Automated Speed Enforcement (ASE) in Mimico? We have two ASE locations in Mimico, both in Community Safety Zones near schools: Mimico Ave., west of Station Rd. Stanley Ave., near Elizabeth St.
Thanks to Toronto’s Open Data initiatives, we can easily see how many tickets these ASEs have been issuing every month. Open Data is an important tool to hold government accountable. On Stanley Ave., there has been a significant and steady decline in speeding incidents since ASE was deployed — from 227 issued tickets in April 2025 to 73 in July 2025.
On Stanley Ave., there has been a significant and steady decline in speeding incidents since ASE was deployed — from 227 issued tickets in April 2025 to 73 in July 2025.
Residents have been asking for speed limit enforcement to make Mimico streets safer for a long time.

Don’t Believe the City of Toronto Data? Ask SickKids.
A 2025 study by SickKids found: “(ASE) cameras reduced the number of speeding vehicles by 45 per cent in urban school zones.” We can see this effect right here in front of our schools in Mimico. Dr. Andrew Howard, Head of Orthopedic Surgery and Senior Scientist in the Child Health Evaluative Sciences program at SickKids, explains:
“Speed is the single most important factor in pedestrian injury risk. This study shows that ASE can be an effective way to reduce that risk, especially in areas where children are most vulnerable.”

How Will Removing ASE Make Mimico Streets Safer?
Our Councillor, DM Amber Morley, has already spoken in Council on this issue. We now request that Mimico’s ASE cameras remain in place — because all data and science show that they are working. Helsinki (Finland) made international headlines recently for going an entire year without a single traffic death, with ASE. Toronto streets have seen 14 pedestrians killed in traffic in 2025 so far.  Unfortunately, Doug Ford closed Queen’s Park from June 9 to October 16 — a 17-week summer recess. When Queen’s Park reopens, we ask that our MPP Lee Fairclough press Doug Ford and the Conservative Party of Ontario:
* How exactly does removing ASE make our children safer?
* Why ignore local data, international data and respected SickKids research?
