MRA Letter in support of Grimes’ motion re: West Concrete Campus

Re: EY22.44 – Report Request on the Feasibility of a West Concrete Campus to be considered by City Council on March 21st, 2013

Dear City Clerk:

Thank you for allowing the Mimico Residents Association (MRA) to comment on the above motion.

The MRA fully supports this motion and believes it could be a solution to a serious problem that has arisen in Mimico. We have had three concrete batching facilities locate in Mimico or the immediate surrounding area over the last 8 years in very close proximity to residential areas.

Although the zoning in Mimico has now been changed to ensure that no further batching plants can be established, it does not take into account that two facilities remain in our area. We request that these be considered for relocation and this direction be added into this motion. These are the ML Ready Mix and St. Mary’s Cement facilities.

ML Ready Mix is located directly across from residents on Judson Street and it has become an ongoing health and safety issue (40 feet from homes).

In addition, the MRA opposed St. Mary’s Cement from setting up operations in 2011 as it is only 200 feet from neighbouring homes. However, this was overturned by the OMB in 2012. St. Mary’s are currently starting to prepare their land for construction of the facility.

We remain committed to promoting the quality of residential and economic life in and around the Mimico area.

Sincerely,

Kyra Trainor, President
Mimico Residents Association

  1. Concrete batching plants do not belong near the residential areas. Please stop this from happening in the Mimico community.
