MPP Laurel  Broten answers MRA questions

MRA president Kyra Trainor recently had the opportunity to meet with MPP Laurel Broten and asked the following questions :

Residents are concerned about developers “jumping the queue” to the OMB.  Where does the OMB fit into the equation and who governs it?
MPP Broten: The Ontario Municipal Board (OMB) is an independent, quasi-judicial tribunal that makes decisions at arms length from the government. Their website contains guidelines on how to proceed with regard to community engagement.

Residents have expressed concern over the discharge policy of the new detention centre.  Could you provide us more information on this?
MPP Broten has requested that a “one pager” of information about the Toronto South Detention Centre, including discharge policy, be prepared by the Ministry of Community Safety and Correctional Services. Once it is complete, she will forward directly to the Mimico Residents Association. There is a link to the TSDC webpage on the ministry’s internet site. (www.mcscs.jus.gov.on.ca)

It was brought to the MRA’s attention that there is an old city by-law in Etobicoke that allows for rooming houses to be opened without a license.  What do you know about this?
MPP Broten: This is a municipal issue that is under the jurisdiction of the City of Toronto. The MRA can follow up with Ward 6 Councillor Mark Grimes.
