What’s happening in July

Hi neighbour,

Just one day after breaking a heat record, we’re now dealing with several days of air quality warnings as wildfire smoke settles over the city. Toronto Public Health notes that this smoke can take a real toll on lung and heart health, and that children, seniors, and people with existing conditions tend to feel the effects most.

We encourage you to take a look at the Air Quality Health Index and the steps you can take to protect yourself and your family during smoke events: Wildfire Smoke – City of Toronto.

⛈️ Rain is coming. Have you checked your sump pump recently?

Just before the wildfire smoke arrived, Toronto’s Board of Health was discussing HL34.5 – Investigating the Increased Risk of Heart Disease, Lung Cancer, and Tumours from Bringing Jets to Toronto’s Waterfront Communities.

The Ontario Regional Committee of the Canadian Association of Physicians for the Environment (CAPE Ontario) submitted comments you might find interesting:

  • “Compared with turboprop aircraft, commercial jets generate substantially higher emissions …”

  • “The pollutants emitted by commercial jets carry well‑documented human health risks. These pollutants include ultrafine particles (UFPs) …“ & “UFPs are linked to multi-system diseases.”

  • “These findings are especially relevant to the proposed expansion of Billy Bishop Airport, which is located near one of the most densely populated areas in Canada.”

These are probably some of the reasons why you see hundreds of neighbours putting “no jets T.O.” signs up.

You can also find applications in Toronto’s Application Information Centre (AIC).

There is a lot going on these days, here are just a few projects you might want to know about:

Minto Pivots To Purpose-Built Rental For Five-Tower Mimico Proposal

Including a 54 & 52 storey tower which is somewhat surprising because just a little bit west, at 327 Royal York Road, NAV Canada made sure the towers won’t be taller than 43.

286 Royal York Road

The proposal calls for a 40-storey mixed-use building including 467 residential units. More info here.
