Traffic congestion in Mimico has become an increasingly urgent concern for residents, significantly affecting daily commutes, access to services, and overall quality of life. Mimico’s key arteries regularly experience slowdowns as commuter traffic cuts through residential streets, creating hazards and frustrations for pedestrians, cyclists, and families navigating local roads. These challenges are compounded by the lack of sufficient infrastructure improvements to accommodate both current traffic volumes and anticipated growth in the area.
The Mimico Residents Association is particularly alarmed by the risk that congestion could worsen in the coming months and years, driven by increased population density, ongoing development, and insufficient public transit investment. Without proactive, forward-looking planning, Mimico’s streets will become more gridlocked and less navigable, directly threatening the livability of our community and the well-being of its residents. Several key factors are likely to accelerate this worsening issue in our community:
Ontario Place Parking Garage
- The Ontario Minister of Infrastructure, MPP Kinga Surma (Etobicoke Centre), announced $400 million of taxpayer money for a new parking garage at Ontario Place.
- How do thousands of cars get to that garage? Projections show Lake Shore Boulevard West traffic increasing by 23–40%.
Weekend GO Train Cancellations
- No train service at Mimico GO on weekends: Sept 13–14, Nov 29–30, Dec 6–7.
Gardiner Ramp Closure
- Nov 2025 – May 2026: The on-ramp from Park Lawn Road to the westbound Gardiner Expressway will be closed.
- Drivers from Humber Bay Shores may detour through Mimico to reach the next westbound ramp at Kipling — expect heavier local traffic.
15-Minute GO Service Delayed
- Earlier this year, Metrolinx ended its partnership with ONxpress, the group that was supposed to bring “faster, more frequent” GO service.
- This leaves no clear timeline for delivering the long-promised 15-minute service.
