Provincial government cutting back on affordable housing – have your say!
On January 12th, the Ontario government announced a pause on Inclusionary Zoning (IZ) until July 2027. IZ is a policy tool that compels developers to include affordable housing in Protected Major Transit Station Areas. If you feel that affordable housing is important in our neighbourhood – and across the province – please comment on this public consultation, open only until January 19th.
The MRA strongly believes in affordable housing and in IZ as a tool to achieve it. Our position on this announcement is this:
First, we recommend that the Government of Ontario withdraw its plan to delay and erode efforts at inclusionary zoning.
Second, that it reinstates the ability of municipalities to work with local residents and developers in creating solutions that ensure that market housing better reflects the housing needs of its residents.
Third, that the Government of Ontario work closely with both federal and local governments to promote land acquisition plans in advance of intensification planning, and that it work toward ensuring that cities and local communities can create public land banks and CLTs to strengthen their ability to build and maintain an adequate stock of affordable housing units.
