Re: Official Plan Review – Re-Zoning Request for Newcastle/Portland Community of Mimico
Dear Councillor Grimes,
The Mimico Residents Association supports your proposal to City Council for an official plan review for the area in North-West Mimico which includes Portland, Newcastle and Judson Streets.
We are extremely concerned with the types of businesses that are operating in this area (most notably cement batching plants) in close proximity to the stable residential neighbourhood, and request that Council re-zone this land appropriately to protect the community’s residents. The permitted industrial effects of cement dust, diesel fumes and noise have never been studied and are making living conditions for residents unbearable on the northern side of Judson Street.
We urge the City to undertake sound and thorough planning of this site (reference P/G 19.5). With numerous batching plants being ‘grandfathered in’ with respect to their zoning we are very concerned with the health, safety and quality of life of Mimico residents.
We remain committed to promoting the quality of residential and economic life in and around the Mimico area. If there is anything that the Mimico Residents Association can do to assist with or further support your position in this important issue, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Sincerely,
Kyra Trainor, President
Mimico Residents Association
